A versatile and progressive cellist, Duncan combines technical virtuosity with creative expressiveness, creating impressive soundscapes that establish an immediate connection with his audience.

Profile

Duncan Fikkers is an Australian cellist who has performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. A versatile cellist driven by musical curiosity, he makes music accessible for all audiences and embraces different musical styles.

 

Formerly a Principal cellist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, he performced with many of Australia’s finest orchestras. He was the youngest principal cellist of the Australian Youth Orchestra and, at a young age, won Australia’s most prestigious cello competition for his interpretation of the Dvorak Cello concerto. After studying in Australia, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the renowned New England Conservatory in Boston, we he studied with Colin Carr in a Master's Program. As a recipient of the Queen’s Trust Award, he also studied in England with Raphael Wallfisch, William Pleeth, Colin Carr and Anner Byslma. His repertoire encompasses the great cello classics from the Bach Suites to the Elgar Concerto and branches out into opera, film, popular and rock music, demonstrating the amazing versatility of the cello. 

 

He enjoys collaborating with other artists as a chamber musician and has performed in trios and quartets in Australia, USA and Europe. Duncan has recorded under the ABC Classics label.
